Thank you to everyone that supported this year’s event!
Since 2006, Gifford’s mission through the Last Mile event is to make life’s last mile for patients, their loved ones and families as smooth a road as possible. That could mean meals, travel accommodations, coordinating special events, transportation to appointments, in-home care, funeral expenses or just one final wish being fulfilled.
The Last Mile’s three-day event raises funds to provide palliative care services to patients staying in the hospital. Some benefit from end-of-life care in Gifford’s two Garden Rooms, special hospital suites with a peaceful atmosphere, garden access, and additional space for loved ones. Our grants also help patients who choose to remain at home.

As a volunteer and advocate, Betty Edson of Randolph Center lived her life supporting others. It’s only fitting that in the final weeks of her life, the community, through funds raised by the Last Mile event, was there to support her.
The Last Mile event helped Betty spend her final Christmas in a loving home, surrounded by friends, family and a festive tree. Following her passing in February, The Last Mile provided Memorial Service bulletins and a luncheon that followed the service.
As we celebrate our 17th annual event, we want to make more memorable moments available to our community. We need your help to do it. Please join us in supporting those who face advanced illness so they can live well, right to the end of life's last mile!

2021 Last Mile raises $165,000 for End of Life Care
Over the course of two weekends, Gifford’s 16th annual Last Mile event set a new fundraising and participation record for the medical center. A total of 519 people participated in the bike ride, walk, 5k and motorcycle ride. It has resulted in $165,000 going to Gifford’s palliative care program, assisting families whose loved ones are in life’s last mile.
“I am grateful for the participation and overwhelmed with the emotion I’ve witnessed over these last two weekends,” Gifford Vice President of Development and Public Relations, Ashley Lincoln said. “With this incredible outpouring of generosity, we can continue to support and say yes to our families when called upon.”
Why I Ride...
"In some of life’s hardest times, we can have people in our community come together and help each other. You see the motorcycles, the bicycles, the runners and walkers, they’re all coming together for a cause and it’s a beautiful thing." - Liz Longworth raised $5,745 in 2021!
Why I Ride & Volunteer...
My mom had a very serious stroke and passed about a week later. My son and I were both able to be with her, which was pretty incredible. But most incredible was the services provided in the Garden room by Gifford funded by the Last Mile event.” -Bob Sparadeo, served Gramma Polly's Meatball Sliders at Last Mile events

FAQ's
What time does registration begin for the events?
Do I have to register online?
No. You can download our hard copy registration form, fill it out, and either mail it in or bring it on the day of the ride. Walkers and motorcycle riders can register up to the start of their events. 5K runners who want to be timed must register by 5 PM on Friday evening. Additional registration forms will be available during the registration periods for both days.
Do I have to pay the registration fee or can I raise funds for this?
While we do encourage fundraising, you don’t have to and can pay the registration fee. Some participants raise the minimum registration fee and stop, others keep fundraising to offer increased support for the cause. Those who raise the most each year win some pretty fabulous prizes that are donated from area and regional businesses.
Is there a meal included in the registration fee?
Yes. Friday evening includes post-event snacks, pizza, and beverages for participants. On Saturday, a continental breakfast will be available in the morning for motorcycle riders. Upon returning to Gifford all riders are invited to stay for a BBQ lunch, which includes a vegetarian option.
Can I bring a stroller for my child?
If you are walking yes, the majority of the walking routes are on public sidewalks which accommodate strollers. Strollers are not allowed for those participating in the 5K.
Will there be a stop, or break point, along the motorcycle route?
Yes, we will have a midway break where you can go to the bathroom, stretch your legs, and get a drink of water. Our stop is usually not at a gas station so you should arrive with a full tank. Our midway break location will be in S. Barre at Wilkins Harley-Davidson
